Sunday afternoon
in a house of doom
a house of Death
and gloom
death will come soon

a house so quiet
in sounds like the Night
Dad just sits in his wheelchair
he just sits & stares
out there
where life used ta' be
what does he see?
the where
he was?
back when
back then
and now
he's Breathless
facing the Nothingness
of his last breath
facing Death
Sunday afternoon
the darkness
of Night
the starkness
of Light
the Fright
of Death
his last breath
thAt will come soon

like the Sun
and like the Moon
his Time will soon
End
and begin agin'
as he sits there
in his wheelchair
and he stares
at where?
what does he see
the life that used ta' be?
all he can see
is Death
all he can feel
is his last Breath
and somehow
Life is Real
and now
it's Sunday afternoon
Death will come soon
and when he's gone
he'll be where he belongs
the he'll sing his song
he'll sing a tune
of this Sunday afternoon
and all he had
happy & sad
the good & the bad
will come down
ta' what came around
in the silent sound
of a breathless tune
this Sunday afternoon
Death will come soon
like the Sun & the Moon
all things past
nuthin' ever last
in a Breathless breath
we all face Death
and then we rest
best guess
we be blessed
we past the Test
all too soon
we all live
we all die
we all give
it our best try
truth or a lie
but all too soon
we all live our last Sunday afternoon
all too soon
no matter how we try
we live 'till we die
and all too soon
it's our last
it's the past
it's Sunday afternoon

Powerful and profound, Steve. This is one of your best writes. I can deeply feel your sorrow as you watch your father's last days.

My heart goes out to you and yours,

NO, NO, NO, we are not having depression on this beautiful Sunday afternoon in NJ...the first day I get the chance to wax the company truck and my Jeep...nope no depression here...so cut it out, your dad does not need to know about your depression, he has enough of his own...Ed

This is true for many adults who have reversed roles with parents. You capture the sadness well.

Powerful write... its a soul searching time to watch a love one, slowly depart. Our thoughts, make us uncomfortable and not at ease. Watching my father-in-law last year leave this realm of existence, I believe it was easier on him, then his family. God Bless, in my thoughts and prayers... Dave
