Similarities of a poet and a song writer,
Both express the art form of heightened language,
Tapping into the unspoken aspects of human experience.
Stirring up emotions,
Metaphorically or symbolically,
Enlightening subconscious imagery.
The verses can have multiple meanings,
Depending on how you are feeling,
It can be uplifting and healing,
Triggering memories of a situation,
Intensifying your imagination.
Long after the poem is read, or the song is sung,
The words will resonate deep,
Leaving you yearning for a repeat...
Not because it’s a classic,
But for the feeling of being seen, understood, and comforted through poetic magic.
You're absolutely right. Great poetry resonates and is remembered. And it doesn't have to be a classic in order to do that. It feels very good when someone calls your poem a "keeper".
"Heightened language" is certainly a good way of addressing it. My favorite definition of a poet (that I can pull off the top of my head) is from W.H. Auden. "A poet is, before anything else, a person who is passionately in love with language." I fully concur. Then Anne Sexton has a cute take on it. "One of my secret instructions to myself as a poet is, 'Whatever you do, don't be boring.'" Haha. I agree. Thanks for sharing. You make some good points. I will read this to my wife. Peace...rlc
Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
