Poem Artwork

I stare through your eyes into your soul, watching
ribbons of dancing color weave streams of silvery light.
Feeling queasy, I am, nevertheless, bathed in a soft glow,
expectant, wondering without words what is being born.

A rolling tide swells and grey-green swirls immerse me full
into song of your soul, harmonic ecstasy. I know I am the first
to witness the miracle of our love’s birth, reflected
in twin ponds that hold my unnamed dreams.

My center of gravity shifts as I watch the heaving labor,
see your spirit’s surrender to the painful knowing. A silent scream
(I never know whether from me or you) ruptures
the thin membrane between us. Mystery surges forth,

leaving us profoundly altered, more than a little stunned.

Spherical hope separates, uncoils and frees itself.
You observe the undeniable truth as our creation rises up
and pours itself from the depths of your being to seize
the moment, unguarded, and pierce my stoic heart, unbinding in
an instant all that has been held captive in me.

Neither of us knows what to say to the other, but we can’t pull
ourselves away from force of life, beautiful impossibility
that neither of us remembers willing into existence.
That is the image of us frozen in my mind's eye. I wait there,
locked in its icy interior, for the final thaw.

I realize if you are reading this that you would want to tell me
I am given to wild imaginings. You’d say no such child
ever came to be. But the life, the love, the labor we shared...
these are things a mother never forgets but ponders
and treasures in her heart.

I choose life and thus celebrate the unplanned grace.
I thank God for life of love that was because we were - even
if it must be carried away upon a chilling wave of wind
and never find a home with us again.
