One Lost Whale to Another

In the end they tried to right
the whale, and this warmed me, even
as I floundered, distressed
by waters unfamiliar
and cold.

His was no attempt to beach hope –
the will to live was not lost, but merely
the way back home, after
one wrong turn
too many.

How could he have known the sea
had become a bay had become a river
flowing fast into the narrow
channel through the city of a
strange land?

In his eye I caught a glimmer of
the wish to bridge the gap, too great;
tasted in my tear the salt I hoped
he knew I gladly would
have shared.

Then, I heard his heart had stopped
and so closed my eyes, gathering labored
breath into a prayer that God
might guide my own way
back home.

I agree with Eleen Tiger Lily below completely Dawn !
Sad twin track tale of a disorientated and lost whale and our own soul's mystical journey, we all need guidance in this dark and foreboding world !

Sounds like you've been lost...I've had you in prayer missed seeing you about! Hope you are on the mend. This is a gripping poem that speaks volumes about the dark night of the soul. Hope the sun comes out soon!;-)

I have been pulling for this bottlenose whale for the last couple of days too, Dawn. When I heard that she/he had died, a little piece of me went with her. They said she was already sick and bleeding before they attempted the rescue. I was hoping that they could have made some sort of a basketed cage that would be supported by the pontoons and towed along in the water so her weight would not have the opportunity to crush her already stressed organs...but time was of the essence, if they did not take her when they did, she would have died anyway. Such a noble effort and such a beautiful story with a very sad ending. As I learned that she had died, I also saw the headline that the two miners who had been trapped by fire in West Virginia also had perished. Some days it seems that all hope is shattered, then on another day when all hope has been abandoned we are granted a miracle. Beautiful poem, Dawn, thank you for posting this wonderful offering.

Take care,

Sherry
