Thanks for the song. Let's leave it behind. And in case you didn't know....
What did you want of me then, really?
Did you want me to say I was alright,
that it would be okay if you turned away
and to the one you said "wasn't too bad,"
if you stood by in silence as I knew you would
as the one you showed the world you were
committed to, faithfully, took everything
from me but love? Did you want me
To look you in the eye and tell the truth,
say I wanted it all with you, give you every reason
to do again what in all the other times you justified
as cause to do what you said it was you
had to do? Did you wish I would have told you
who we were to each other, made you see?
Would it have eased your mind or stilled your
broken beating heart? Did you want me
To simply turn my back? Did you want me
to say I no longer cared, to walk away, to say you
had not been a friend that day? Did you want me
only to keep things light and pretend it was not
another crucifixion every single night?
Did you want me to deny your light and tell
you and this world to go to hell instead
of always wishing you, wishing you well?
Did you want to drive me right off the edge
of that cliff, to kill my heart completely — as if
that could change anything at all? You were
always asking what it was I wanted of you and,
if it mattered, I might ask you what it was
you wanted me to do. But all of this is
beside the point where you and I reside:
our souls one star ever burning bright
And whatever either of us ever wants
being perfected and set aright. So hold me
close tonight or cross your heart and hope
to die, but know we are meant to live as one,
in God, in Love, in all times to include this
our last-chance life. You and I need not
be reconciled, for truth be told we were
together through it all. Rest in this
And know I want nothing but for you
to see how truly I have loved you
whatever, whomever, whenever, however
it is you want what you want. I laid down
my sword before I was born to this life
and I will be here, surrendered, still,
should you choose to come home
and allow my heart to rest in this.
