Sometimes players plot and
plan poison passion plays
in secret, far away
and even try to win
game before they suit up
to play on proper field.
On ocassion they may
stoop lower to betray,
though it seems that they
convince themselves that it
is just protection,
success, some guarantee.
On long walks they decide
what they tell themselves is
necessary ambush
in advance. They get their
stories straight. And never
once do they consider
What they sacrifice—true
honor, love, privilege
to breathe and live to play
another day. No, they
would crush one to powder,
not caring who they hurt
Just to rise to power.
This is not harmony.
This is not the honor
I respected them for.
This is not truth—for you
who join their team know so
How I have loved you true
and championed you at
every turn, gave up much
to be there, celebrate
your joy, success and life's
well-deserved happiness.
And in other district
the other players on
huge team... they too turn, but
to greater tyranny
for they are recruits roped
into a game of blame
Meant to be distraction.
Because players who have
been tainted, desperate
to win at any cost
have no qualms in squashing
futures to avoid loss.
So they stack stories and
don't think twice as they move
to destroy bond that's true
just to prove another
betrayed me when I too
already knew. Maybe
It is to paint me as
one who holds no honor.
Is this why cardinal
hurled himself against the
window resurrection
day? He, who so loved you
As I do, who listened
to every low note with
an honest heart, he who
also betrayed but knew
all the energy cast
was killing both of us.
This morning her smile came
to me, woke me from dream
and when the tear rolled down
my cheek I remembered
laughing when two were young.
I thought of kangaroos.
Yes I saw mother, babe
swaddled and her hearbreak.
Beautiful butterfly
you too flew through heart,
free spirit so like me—
and boy most innocent.
So this is how you play
your games, filing papers
to seize again what was
already stolen? Know
such agenda dark does
more damage at start
Than temporary win
by discrediting me,
team of one heart bleeding,
these green eyes who have seen
too many things to be
surprised by cruelty.
Each person is but a grain of sand resting beside the sea. This thought sets the tone for Jill Eisnaugle’s latest poetry collection, Beside Still Waters.
