a pocket watch
with no hands
to hold
is pressed for time
within stolen moments
lost
beneath a transparent face.

revolving recollections
of a classical movements
gilt times
are wound in symphonic dreams
of many a spring
its jeweled heart hidden
within a waistcoat pocket
of worn seams.

in closing
a cover of forever
remains unopened
suspended in time
upon a chain
in vested silence
ones beloved remains
all that is left
engraved in gold
to my cherished angel
now and forever.

This is beautiful...reminds me of an old Gentleman who came in to the Library where I worked at as a young woman..He sported the most handsome engraved gold pocket watch on a chain..and a magnificent variegated Yellow Carnation..of which he later brought me a cutting of the latter, as I admired it so much! I also admired the Pocket watch, and mused over it's history...
Thanks for recalling this special memory for me. It is a truly wonderfully crafted poem. Diana.

Time is an illusion, used only to measure point to point. Love the watch without hands. This has the feeling of a man who has transended time, seeing life in reality, awake. AWAKE, not sleeping our way through what we think is life.... tip top...

Fantastic sustained metaphor that is meticulously wrought and wound... the pacing is good and I love the way all the poetic cogs fit and drive each other along. The first stanza hooked me in completely, the clarity of thought... followed by the more lavish development of emotion and sentiment in the other two. In my mind, I go from the strong Roman Numerals of the first verse to a beautiful curlicue script in the last. Very fine writing, John. Thank you. Kate xx

Wonderfully put!
I am an avid "Estate Sale" lover...once, I came across this pocketwatch of a father, who's son was selling all his cherishables after he passed, but, sadly, for this son, nothing seemed cherished. I wondered...and asked myself, what son and why, would sell his fathers pocketwatch??? It bothered me for a long while after that... and this brought all the heartfelt feelings back again! A pocketwatch to a man, years ago, was side by side with a women's locket...Where did those days go?
Loved your pen today!
Come to think of it, I love your pen...anyday!
Smiles to you!
Love and Peace~

"suspended in time... in vested silence... ones beloved remains (wound in symphonic dreams) You said it perfectly - what a memorial of love! (although I like to play with the lines for my own meaning.)
Having not posted in sometime I was strangely and divinely led to click on you again - and sometimes, though I think you the greater poet - we share some kind of paralell destiny as creators (hopefully mine being music not poems!) "I AM SILENCED" by this post!
best michael,

John,
This poem is profound and beautiful. The memories within your words are so precious. My great-grandfather has such a pocket watch and it has stayed in our family through time, several moves and our varied travels around this country. I guess each of us leaves our legacy behind in different, yet equally special ways.

Brilliant work!

I adore this poem. It is almost like a time capsule enclosing
a cherished memory and playing the cherished scene over and over
each time the memory gets sweeter. The past, is the present, and the future is the past in this netherworld enclosed in the "cover of forever"...a place where time stands still and what was...still is..
somewhere within the lost moments of the pocket watch...lovely words,
beautiful message!

Bravo!! loved it!!

Wow! This is eerie. I just got my grandfather's gold pocket watch, Elgin's Watch Works , crystal replaced. It is a beautiful rose gold with double covers that flip open when one needs to see the time or wind it. It keeps perfect time. I gave it renewed life this past week and your poemhere means so much to me. I am printing your poem up and placing uit with the pocket watch.

Love and blessings,
Susan
