For my daughter, Carrie.

My Imaginary Friend

My friend, Sherla, was hard to see
(for Mom and Dad, not me).
My imaginary friend was all I had.
I’m an only child, you see.

Most times, Sherla was really good.
We did puzzles, read, and played.
We made our bed and cleaned our room
almost every single day.

But sometimes Sherla spilled my milk,
sometimes she wrote on walls,
sometimes she told me not to come
when Mom and Daddy called.

I had to have a talk with her
about being a naughty kid,
'cause I’m the one who got time out
for all the things she did.

It’s different now, I go to school.
I have friends everywhere.
Sherla doesn’t come here now
and I thought she didn’t care.

Mom told me Sherla’s ‘special’
cause only I could see,
and now she lives with someone else
who needs her more than me.

Oh, those impish imaginary friends; always getting someone in trouble. But also great "company". Love the ending explanation: no bursting of a child's bubble would you give us :o) Another DEE-LIGHTFUL one, CJ

Such an imaginery friend would have been more useful to me than the idolised beefcakes padding out the B-picture screen at the local flea pit. They only got me eating more porrige and cheese and for what? Barely the strength to balance a mug of cocoa on my left ear.

A charming read.

The is so good, and so true, CJ. We all, as children, had an imaginary friend. I can't remember blaming her, though, she was always just a friend. A delightful read, as always. :)

God Bless
Love, Lena

Incredible how children fantasize such beings. The important thing is that they grow out of it. I wonder if I have grown out of mine, there he is looking over my shoulder trying to see what I'm writing :) Excellent poem JC, you never disappoint. Victor

Dear CJ ...

I also had an imaginary friend in my youth. He was an old Viking Warrior that used to share wisdom and show me the better ways of fighting the battles that would assuredly come my way in life.

Again you prove, without doubt, that you have a unique calling as a writer. Loved this!

Oh my CJ this is just stunning, you've given me a trip down memory lane. My son Jonathan had an imaginary friend, ironically his name was Jonathan as well. He too was to blame for many of Jonathan's childhood antics, such as crumbs in the bed, bathwater on the bathroom floor...but also a fond companion for imaginary play. I never discouraged Jonathan's imaginary friend, after all a child without an imagination is not complete in my eyes. Imagination is creativity...Jonathan's imaginary friend slowly drifted away, especially after his sister Bethany was old enough to play with. CJ you've penned a beautiful write that has such a sweet and caring ending....
and now she lives with someone else
who needs her more than me...
only you could've come up with such a beautiful and perfect ending.
Blessings and happy holidays,
Joyce Bowling

CJ:

This is cute. We all lived with imaginery friends when we were little. I had a whole table of tea-party set all set out for my imaginery friend and my stuffed pink rabit when I was a child. We had tea-party everyday, and that was fun!
