This is a song with vocals and I am posting the version I recently recorded in my home studio. It will be on my jazz CD: AugustOceanOverture due out soon in October. The reason: the upbeat, country piano part (very hard to play!) was to go on just as a solo as originally recorded (no voice). Thanks to inspiration from some authors here at AD, I found it in myself back in August to put a few lyrics to part of it as a sort of history-story song that includes some images based on my ancestors on my mother's side. They came here from England in 1649 and their great grandson fought in the Battle of Long Island in the Revolutionary War. It also makes a good protest song for those current "kings" today in government who think they can obscure the real reasons why it was common people like fisherman and farmers that settled this country, precisely so that the rich could not just get richer on the "Fruits of others Labors" (read cutting benefits of the poorer classes while the rich coporate government types get their TAX CUTS!) Now I and others who aren't rich may have to lose our medically necessary medicines so that these "Bastard Kings" who pass themselves off as Patriots can consolidate their power and reap the benefits of the system for which they never toiled!
The fact is that American Tax dollars should pay for necessary benefits for all who may find themselves in dire need. And that could even be YOU someday! But "they" don't care; they buy everything they need!

My Country

These lyrics Aug. 27. 2007: To the tune of my piano solo: MyCountry on my CD “August Ocean Overture” to appear on my vocal demo: “Across the Sea of Madness”

1.      Well, I had a forefather, who built a little ship

And came across the wide, blue sea.
He left
England – [to ‘cross – a Sea of Madness’]
And landed on an
Island, near a bright blue bay –
And built a little cabin in the woods (in some wild place)
              In some Lonely wooded country—
He wasn’t trying to conquer it; he was just praying to survive,
     And feed his family-
And trying to live free – in this country
                                          [in the country]

 2.     I found out he had a son, (and then) the son had a son,
                                              [in this country]
But the day came when an army would come
                                         (into this country)
And tried to make him pay the “King”
For everything he had struggled so hard to become (and had done)
--and the king took his “fruits of
                                           labor” (money)
And paid it to his rich (corrupt) Fools—
                                           [in His country]

3.  Then one day they came with their ships and guns,
And told him to lay down his –
But this son went with the other farmers
                                           (and fisherman)
To a high bluff on their Long... Long
Island,
To stand firm and be counted [on his ground]
                                               [in This country]

Alternate 8: (8-12 bar) chorus verses [2 versions]>

Version#1:
And nobody’s gonna tell me how to write—[how to fight]
Or how I should be…. [in My Country]
If you don’t pick on me – I won’t pick on you
But, I refuse to be blind, just so that you can say “I see” (so you can see)
In My Country – but since you say “I see,” just better--  Let me be me… [in My Country]

 Version#2:
And nobody’s gonna tell me how to vote…
                                  [how to promote]
                                  (or write this note…
Or how I should sing this song (!)
If you don’t like what I say, then don’t listen to me
But, I refuse to be silent, just so only you can be heard.
Because I was born here and wrote this song –     In My Country...

     In this country.

 8/27/07  c. 2007, michael a. guy

I think that we are given shorter life spans because if we lived longer....it would all come full circle...different century, different war, different plague. Perhaps we'd all catch on easier to what life really means.
I ewnjoyed this and would like to hear the music too.

Now this is what I call real patriotism, they fled England,Germany, the Netherlands, and the rest of the world to be free, yet if you let it happen, things will revert back to where it all started, Keith said it well! Bless you I can't open your Music yet, but I hope to find a way, keep on writing your voice has to be heard!

You're an authentic voice of freedom in the tradition of Dylan. How dare they arrogate to themselves the right to steal our monthly wages in the name of WHAT?!

We are all now slaves in the west.

Blessing upon you and yours,

Keith

Think you have very Patriotically said it the best. Speak long and loud and never, ever allow anyone to stop you or take a way what you so strongly believe in. "Battle of Long Island"??? How very interesting.....

Be safe,
Karen

Your song is a powerful reminder of what America is - FREE! Let's keep it that way and stop giving our money to corporate America.

The versions 1 & 2 are the foundation of America's freedom. Yet, I think that is being erroded by those who "think" they're being helpful, only to line their pockets.

Your music enhances the plight faced by all of us.

Michael,

I've missed you. :(

This is a soul stirring piece; our forefathers would be rolling in their graves to see the apathetic, don't give a rip attitudes displayed by their offspring. Well done!

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Michael, I hear in your written words and your sound the pain felt by the injustice of the land. You have a powerful message and your song is quite inspiring. P.S. Can you break off into your falsetto voice? Just had to ask. Blessings from a friend,Holly

Great job with this one Mike. I think people have forgotten just how brave were the ordinary farmers and fishermen to stand up to tyrany, and overwhelming odds against an army that had conquerd most of the known world. Thanks for bringing music to my computer today.

And I think you wrote a very fine historical piece here, Michael. America truly was built by the common folk immigrants - people who had virtually nothing in their possession but a very strong desire to build a new and better life for themselves and 'a free to be' country for everyone - something many of our pompous, rich, 'self knighted' politicians seem to completely ignore these very sad days.
