Small Boy At A Funeral

Seems like I've had several poems about funerals. Here is a very tender one.

I sat in a funeral home today
with an open casket of somber gray.
A four year old boy walked up to look in
with the casket the same height as his chin

His curiosity seemed to prevail
as he stared at the body in detail.
What were his thoughts as he stood and stared?
I’d like to have asked but I never dared.

How could his young mind ever understand
something that mystifies the wisest man?
You can’t explain it to him, nor can I.
Can you tell a child what it means to die?

His bright eyes were wide open as he turned.
To know all his thoughts my mind never learned.
Then I was told the deceased was his dad
My heart became heavy – this was so sad.

It seemed there were no right words I could say
I opened my heart and began to pray.
I pray that he’ll be surrounded with love
from family and friends and our God above

Absolutely beautiful words Larry as my heart breaks, it has to be devistating to this tiny child to look at his dad for the last time. He will have to wait a few years before he fully understands death. Thank you Larry for sharing.

Well done Larry. It is so very difficult for kids to understand the cycle of death, or, for that matter, the cycle of life. My heart breaks every time a child has to endure anything that breaks their happy world apart.
Best regards,
Chris

I was 10 when my dad died, and in my innocence of youth I could not believe it even though I saw him there. Somehow it just didn't seem real to me.

How empathatic and compassionate. My heart is breaking.

While I like the poem, I am truly saddened by the thought of one so young having to deal with such an incredible loss. It IS good to be "... surrounded with love from faily and friends and our God above"
