My way of dealing with type II diabetes which I have had for about 5 years. It can be a blessing when you look at it from the proper perspective.
My family gave me something I could do without.
I wanted to avoid it – of that there is no doubt.
Both grandmothers had it, and other kin as well.
Did I contribute to it? – it’s really hard to tell.
I ate the things I shouldn’t and missed the food I should.
Instead of what was healthy, I ate what tasted good.
The pounds went on and clothes sizes grew
But I knew every name in the McDonalds crew.
Now I have a battle which I face each day
No matter how I wish, it’s really here to stay.
I know I must remember that it is always there
And follow the instructions for all my healthy care.
Daily, I’m so thankful for the progress that’s been made.
With exercise and proper food, I think I’ll make the grade.
Each day I hope scientists will find that special cure.
Until that day of promise, I know I will endure.
It sounds like I’m complaining but I’m really rather blessed.
The issues of my health has finally been addressed.
I’m developing habits which I didn’t in my past.
Perhaps I have a better chance for healthy life at last.
Larry I thought your words were very well penned, Diabetis runs through our family, six of us with it, my oldest sister lost a leg through it and I thank God above I have had a chance to follow healthy guidelines to losing weight and eating properly. We can live a happy healthy life if we really take care. Thank you for sharing.

You have penned this beautifully from your heart and mind's understanding of what it takes. A terrible disease and I am truely sorry that you, along with so many others must live with....
Be safe,
Karen

"... a healthy life at last." In the physical sense, I hope you do too. I know that your spiritual health is in excellent shape. While we'd rather have both of them in tip-top shape, if I could only have one -- it would be my spiritual health.
Diabetes is a nasty illness; it's nothing to mess with; you can get in so much trouble if you don't take the right amount of insulin, get the needed rest, check your blood sugar often, and eat the right things. I know some people with diabetes who eat the wrong things; then they wonder why they don't feel good or why they end up losing their legs or their sight. Sad how they don't care! However if you learn to take care of yourself, you can have a good life, even with having diabetes.
Excellent write!
No, I do not have diabetes (been tested, blood sugar normal), but my mom had it. She had brittle diabetes; she had it for years. She is now passed; i still miss her still now, and it's been 17 years since she's died.

Diabetes can be nasty: took my beloved mother's life 17 years ago. I miss her, still.
However, if you learn to manage it, you can live with it and not be lived by it. Excellent write.
