We were a large poor family, but one year our thanksgiving had a special treat.
Thanksgivings were meager on our farm.
Never a turkey dinner with its charm.
Nine mouths to feed a chicken dinner.
In those days I was so much thinner.
The duck migration crossed our little farm,
but without a gun we caused them no harm.
One day our father saw a strange new sight.
A duck walked by who was injured in flight.
The hunter hadn’t been very good,
but he provided our thanksgiving food.
My father chased down that injured creature,
knowing he’d be our thanksgiving feature
We built him a pen in which he could stay,
until the approaching Thanksgiving day.
On this one holiday we were in luck,
our special meal was not chicken—but duck.
I do believe that God provides as a child of nine from a poor family, our Thanksgiving dinner usually consisted of a Moose roast. Thank you for sharing Larry.
Your story really shows how so many people are truly spoiled today. Although we lived in the big city, not on a farm, my immigrant grandparents had a huge family, and my grandmother could feed a family of 10 with one blessed chicken for an entire week (we ate lots of chicken soup.)
Blessed are the ones that are poor but have a family around the Thanksgiving table to show love for each other and thanks the Lord.
The rich ones have a thanksgivingday for the price of a oil barrel.

The special holiday meals in a large family are always good food for memories. We got to eat in the dining room, with Mom's better dinnerware on such occasions. Including my parents, we were 10, but oh those special meal festivities are what keep me wishing that I was young, again.

Who says Thanksgiving has to be all about turkey? As long as God provided, I'd enjoy whatever He put in front of me, even if it quacks! LOL Well done.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
One year, I had Thanksgiving mac and cheese, 'cause that's all there was. Was grateful for it, too. :)
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!
(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :D
God bless you. Kathy
