A deserted dresser drawer
Forgotten Memories, just a piece
Of furniture, I was going to throw out.
But the treasure that ancient thing held,
gave me something to think about.
For a bundle of letters in an old rubber band
seemingly from nowhere fell from my hands.
Looking at the dates on the yellowed paper
I now remembered the silver tongued man.
So long ago, while he was at war, letters came
daily, written by his beautiful hand. A deep
romantic with words of gold, he told her always
of his longing and his love. They would soon be
wed when he came back from the war, she was a
lucky woman, who could ask for more.
I bundled the letters back up with a new rubber band,
I carefully placed them back in the old dresser drawer.
No one would understand how much they meant.
A couple separated by the tragedy of war, or how
Joyous when the letter telling of his return was sent.
And as I thought of the couple and the special love they had,
It was so hard to believe they were my Mom and Dad.
