Keep on writing.

I write frequently of the nonsense of poetry, but still write poetry to sharpen my skills and waste words. Most critics and many teachers are dead wrong. When people 'hit' my poem for 6200 times or want to pay $1900 to expose it to 400,00 youngsters a year, then I'm vindicated. Not wanting to be a 'one hit wonder,' I keep writing.

So should you.

Your teacher is a dolt, and a worldly sort -
Of games of rhyme and tender fantasies sublime -
He (she?) knows nothing, and nonsense does not sport,
But wordy work done's all work not play, will not mine
gold of pocket, heart or mind; such will not brighten your day
And do not follow such advice, but to thy own heart(be true)
for there's no-sense in what such "writer's references say
And besides, I've found that all such "fiction" work doth not (necessarily) pay!

Seems that the teacher must have had rocks for brains; she had no clue whatsoever what she was talking about! You write for YOU; don't worry about what anyone else says! Excellent posting, Mary; well penned! BRAVA!

Nonsense - very interesting take on it. I could not disagree more -- that writing poetry will take away your skill. I think rather it will enhance your skill - not take away. The more you write - the more you stretch your imagination -- the better writer you will be. So even if the attempt is considered "bad" - it really isn't - it's the stepping stone to get to the place you want to be.
Keep up your writing in whatever shape or form it takes for you. Susan

You decide ! She is talking utter nonsense, Mary. Poetry is an excellent way to get things off your chest and here in The Den you have friends who enjoy what you write and care about you also. Ask her if Robert Frost and other great poets were wasting their time.

why indeed. I met an old friend not to long ago from the hoodlum neighborhood I grew up in, he asked what I'd been doing and when I told him I'd been writing poetry he laughted and said back when we were teens would have got my ass kicked for just admitting that...funny how times change.

If its fun and doesn't hurt anybody and makes you feel good then DO IT! Even if it does seem like nonesense. Your "Nonesense" poem is interesting.
