I review rather belatedly but the poem has touched me so deeply. First I am an African who saw famine not in the TV but in all my environs. Secondly I am a relief worker and I see people in desperate wait for aid because the pipeline through which the stuff comes is too long and it has to go many check points before it finally tricked in the mouths of those who needed it.

David this is a trully awesome excellant thought provoking piece, Yes I have wondered the same too. I must admit having been to some of the poorest parts of inner and lower Mexico aid there YES does help!

Well I know personally that I will give because I know that even though only a part of it may reach the ones that really need it, at least part of it got there. It may not have been the part that I actually gave, but if I hadn't of given, then they would have gotten even less. There are so many out there that needs help that it's hard for me to sit down to a meal and not think at all about those that have not that chance to do so. Personally,,,I'll keep giving. ~SH~

I've thought about this often and share your concerns.I'm also concerned when I hear people suggesting that the aid doesn't get through and so they won't donate at all! They don't give a thought about any alternatives...the sort of apathy you talked about in your poem yesterday.
Once, I gave money to a lad on the street and suddenly realised just what I was doing...paying for his next shoot up.From then on I bought a little food, crisps or something, and took it to them. Maybe they cursed me afterwards but maybe they ate a little. I don't get out now, but my kids do the same sort of thing.

Good write. My thoughts is that we do what we can. When I can I help those I am aware of that need help and I still put some change into the pots and other things that are around at stores and so forth That way I am doing something personally and also impersonally just in case it really does make it to someone who needs it.
