He often treated her as though she was

One of his grievances against the world,

Then tossed her aside like a weed.

The distance between them had become

That of a vast and unmovable object.

Now, a pained sigh escapes from her lips

As she looks into his eyes and offers a smile –

Her idea of penance.

He returns the smile –

Reluctant forgiveness on his part.

Tears sting the corners of her eyes and upon

Seeing this, he raises his hand in a gesture of surrender.

She knows what she wants –

Contentment and love -

Not unattainable things.

Looking down at the floor, she chooses to remain silent -

Hoping her thoughts will not somehow destroy her.

Andy said it. Very close to home for more than a few, I reckon. How do we understand that love which seems to be more of an apology or a brick wall than a passion for the person so "loved"? In such instances, it can seem to be more of a mutual gaol sentence than a wide and spacious place in which to live and grow. Love and contentment are basic to what a marriage bond should be all about. There is nothing so lonely in a relationship as emotional distance, and, if it is insurmountable, the pain of maintaining futile channels of communication can bring sickness on both the body and mind. Yes, destruction, really. Painful and harrowing write, Dawn. But we often press on, Come What May. Bless you for this, Kate xx

This reads like the opening of a Hardy type novel.
Yet I know of so many women who are living this life of purgatory. Giving everything, hoping things will change, whilst her soul is systematically destroyed...

This is deep! She speaks what she wants and if it's given what a joy but if not, it is her doom....Love it!

You can go there... and you do! This is creative, and brash, along with the boldness of shy before the storm. I may have read more here than is written, but it's good poetry, and I like it.

The right look at the right time, accompanied by a soft, warm smile can evoke unexpected feelings - perhaps "surrender" transforms to forgiveness - to acceptance?

One of the heaviest poem I've see you write, at least in my way of thinking . . . A woman mistreated . . .Same woman next verse giving penance to his reluctant forgiveness . . . He now knows what he wants out of life and it is smooth sailing with her in last verse . . . The kicker, the couplet is dynamite inside her heart and soul . . . WELL FRIGGIN' DONE DAWN

Dawn,

Poignant lesson in here, to keep the doors of communication, open - well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Dawn,

Sounds like a sad Mother's Day poem. Perhaps silence is what got them to that situation in the first place. Communication always helps but if one will not listen then both parties lose. Peace, Love and Blessings Always, Paul.
