Resurfacing Demons

I remember the rain pounding the door

then punishing the pavement,

as though trying to cleanse the earth of her sins.

I remember the daisies by the living room window,

their petals pressed to the glass

as if desperately seeking the warmth of the sun.

I remember the vase that dropped from my hand,

then crashed to the floor –

the blood that dripped from my finger onto

the tile as I scraped up the pieces.

I wonder what, if anything haunts your memories

or tortures your soul.

But, then, you were always so sure –

always so justified.

And although these demons occasionally resurface,

I know that I am the fortunate one –

able to look them straight in the eye –

not ignoring their existence –

nor trying to place the blame.

It's funny how details from the past come back to the surface all of a sudden and they can be small and extremely precise... I like the elliptic way in which you have described the need for clarity and precision that is free of feelings of guilt and revenge.

Dawn - Loved the vivid imagery that fills this poem. You communicate the experience and the relationship without bogging the poem down with details. That's poetry. Especially liked:
And although these demons occasionally resurface,

I know that I am the fortunate one –

able to look them straight in the eye –

not ignoring their existence –

nor trying to place the blame.

Razor sharp and incisive, Dawn. Love the clarity and yet the acute sensitivity in your lines. Like the magnifying effect of a water droplet on a leaf, it seems that your thoughts have clarified and intensified with distance. Nerve-tingling stuff here, thank you! :)) xx

This poem... it was like you were writing from my soul. It made me teary eyed. I met my demon face to face this summer. One of the hardest things I have ever done, but in the end... I gave her a hug and told her I missed her and in my heart I knew it was true. Yes, she still feels justified in what happened, in her part in all that occurred to rip our friendship apart... but in the end... I feel sorry for her. I miss my friend, but I can move on with a free conscience knowing that I have truly forgiven and am free of the feelings of guilt and blame that plagued me for a year. Realizing that I have worth, as does my friend, helped me to face my demon.

Truly nice work Dawn....even though it seems like there are those who do not waver or shiver from the remembrance of those moments when fright grips the very essence of one's being, the reality is that everyone has those moments and or memories of demons and the haunting past clutching onto our skin trying to hold us down....and it is also true there are those who can stand and fight the fight of life....that moment when all is lost and yet there we stand...free of all that blame waiting to run us down...

We are stronger than any demon that has been created to hold us down...

nice work...

Very real and very painful...the reader is left wondering what shock caused you to drop the vase and pick it up and cut yourself on it, did he tell you he was leaving, did you hear of a death, etc.

Hello Dawn,

Very deeply profound and incisive, well written too. Another title could be "Maturity" - having the guts to face mistakes and learn from them...and start all over.

Painful - but beautifully penned, Dawn :-)

I suppose, in the living of life, we all manage to collect a "demon" or two which has teeth. They do resurface to nibble and be recognised. Sounds like you have yours well under control.
