Misfortune's Drama

The amber colored liquid

flows from the glass past your lips.

You swallow hard

then shiver with eyes closed.

A sad melody plays off in the distance,

lending itself to the drama.

You – wallowing in self-pity,

yet pretending to be stoic –

relishing the madness that constantly surrounds you –

the scene that of some B - rated movie –

and I watch as you anxiously wait

to feed off life’s next misfortune.

Our tendency to feel self pity is human and often the feelings of the victim rather than the perpetrator. Those who give leave themselves vulnerable to self blame. So well you capture moments in your writtings, it's the uman element you expose. Wonderful write.

Dawn - life teaches us to respect the cynical view, but feasting on it to justify surrender leads us to our "wallowing in self pity" Sharp, accurate and powerful poem. - David

Nice work Dawn...drowning in one's sorrows can place the moment right behing that glass of illusions...there are so many who run from it and those who incorporate into their lives...

nice...

Carin, thank you for your comments, but I didn't write the poem for anyone in particular. I was a psychology major in school, and most of what I write is about the "human condition" and a lot from observation...and a healthy imagination. Thanks again!

A portrait, but a critical one, I think.
It's like the repetition of an acquired pattern.

I know people like this...minus the amber liquid...unless it is apple juice...hee, hee... but those that relish the self-pitying wallowing...
It is sad...sad that they want to be miserable.

Ah, and there are many who this poem showcases . . . More now than I have ever seen . . . I think we have the daily, trashy, talk shows on television for begetting the victimization of us . . .

Highly commendable writing about a sorry and pitiful scene that is reenacted daily, beginning at five. Or has it continued since the pre-lunch hour. Some of us kill ourselves with food, others with high profile work and stress. But, as you write, the lowest down critter seems to be the one addicted to drink and its illusions. Bonheur! Let's have a V-8!

Dawn, a sharp-focused miniature painting this, but nothing miniature about it in terms of expression or perspective...and I'm glad I gave up alcohol all those years ago!! Perfect last two lines.
