...to protect and preserve

Poem Artwork

Speak to the lands,
they are awaiting your call,
your recognition of respect
for your ancient land.

Reward those with your thoughts:
those who had planted the seed,
nurtured the harvest of your being;
celebrate your heritage.

Call together your children,
and their children, on this day.
Share with them the lands of their pasts;
feast with them on the knowledge
  of preservation!

18 April
"World Heritage is the shared wealth of humankind. Protecting and preserving this valuable asset demands the collective efforts of the international community. This special day offers an opportunity to raise the public's awareness about the diversity of cultural heritage and the efforts that are required to protect and conserve it, as well as draw attention to its vulnerability.
On 18 April 1982 on the occasion of a symposium organised by ICOMOS in Tunisia, the holding of the "International Day for Monuments and Sites" to be celebrated simultaneously throughout the world was suggested. This project was approved by the Executive Committee who provided practical suggestions to the National Committees on how to organise this day.
The idea was also approved by the UNESCO General Conference who passed a resolution at its 22nd session in November 1983."

Below is a link to those World Heritage sites thus far recognized and protected. Find your ancestral country, learn of and teach about its beauty!

I was born of Irish immigrants and was steeped in Ireland's history. We have gone back to the records in Ireland to all my known ancestors but much is lost.

Micke, thank you so much for reminding us ,I am guilty of having forgotten!!! I love what you have said here and hope we all will be urged(as I am) to do as you say and look into our heritage with family and give the day its due,by celebrating our own and others heritage. This is something we could be doing to have a friendlier world!Thanks again Micke I'm fired up about it!;-)

Now you're talkin, Micke! Yet one more problem I see today, is almost everyone trying to be exactly the same, and hating anyone who is not exactly like them. Like you, I believe our heritage, our family culture, and our diversity, are yet another wondrous gift we've all been given, and we should strive to pass it on to our offspring. I was shocked when I chatted with some young kids recently, and most of them didn't even know where their greatgrandparents came from, or what they did.
