Gilda was the last in the line of southern holy women born into the Lyons family.
She prided herself on being a virtuous woman as long as there was no gin around and she wasn’t wearing a tight red dress.
You see there was something about gin and red dresses that persuaded gilda to renounce her virginity to one and all as she danced the night away with her suitor of the moment and Gilda drank a lot of gin and had a lot of temporary suitors
She never called them lovers because Gilda had loved only one man in her whole life and was heart broken when she discovered that Elton Bailey was her third cousin twice removed.
Elton had pawed at her with his feverish hands that night and she had shown her most inviting smile with lips slightly parted to reveal her new gold tooth and was just about to lean into a kiss when she fell off the bar stool.
Her new store bought wig fell off and her tight red dress ripped half way up her thigh as she discovered she had also broken her new black and white patent leather spectator heels.
Worst of all Elton Bailey leaned as far back as he could on his bar stool pointed to her on the floor slapped his thigh and laughed louder than anyone else in the bar and they all laughed until they cried.
No one attempted to help Gilda from the sawdust covered floor of the juke joint.
Not one of her previous temporary suitors moved in her direction.
Elton laughed so hard he held his sides as he slipped from the bar stool and laid down beside her squealing with glee.
Looking into his red eyes and drunken drooling mouth she cried I’m saved and repentant and getting up from the floor swore off then and there that she would stray no more.
She had heard the call for abstinence and left her lovers and the juke joint to become a virgin reclaimed until next Friday night and a new bottle of gin bought by her new true love
