The Search
In the weeks after my mother died
I stripped the paintings from the walls
Bought new ones set into fresh frames
Repainted, refinished, replenished--
I called it a change of art.
It didn’t work to assuage the grief.
Grief is more than surface deep.
In the months that passed when my step-dad died,
I traveled, from city to city and place to place,
Searched for serenity in fair, famous spaces
Recharged, renewed, refined--
I called it travel a la carte.
It didn’t work to erase the tears.
Tears flowed from the core of me.
In the year since autism entwined
Its mysterious tentacles on the baby,
I combed the Internet's library, read scientific tomes.
Researched, reviewed, rediagnosed--
I called it assessing the parts.
It hasn’t yet worked to change his world
A world based precipitously upon hope.
It takes courage to poemize one's own inner picture on family situations... "The Search" is a clear painting by a wise mind.
May Mother Poet smiles the answer.
