I lie awake and hear the wind Talk in whispers through the trees And swear I hear it but retell All the lies I once believed. Its voice is haunting, Like a song, As it beckons through the night— Calling softly beyond the window Framed by the moon’s indifferent light.
It bows and whirls and leaps and spins, Running its fingers through the leaves, And dares the restless shadows To rise and follow where it leads. Then it climbs the trellis to my room And lingers, Tapping on the panes, Until I turn my face away From its foolish lover’s games.
