The picture of health--
That’s what they told me you were,
when they hurried from the room with you…
            -hurried for my sake, not yours-
                 You were in no danger.

Saddened at the lost chance
to touch your new born soul--
oblivious to the call of death
                                    -for me…
                                                -for you…
                        I slept five hours,
                                    Dreaming of heaven, and you…

while unbeknownst to me, 
            I was crying pools of tears 

Twelve hours later
they used big words to tell me
your heart wasn’t whole…      

My mind, held in angels’ arms,
 When they gave me the news
                                    -of you…
                                                -of me…
Protecting my heart from the pain
            -the hurt would eventually come, 
              ripping through my consciousness –
              leaving Swiss Cheese holes in my heart…

But my heart must have already known
            -it had bled for you until it was drained
                                                                            Empty…
                                                                                        yet so full of void

I wanted to cry out!
Instead, I smiled…
            requesting to see you.  
Not understanding the effort it would take,
but knowing I needed you and you needed me--
            I begged for permission.

I couldn’t hold you--
            You were trapped in a world of machines
            paralyzing your body and heart,
            giving you your life’s breath.

I was trapped in my own world
            With no strength to give you- -
            only the brief touch of my hand 
            through the cold steel rails of our beds.

But in that brief moment of contact
I gained strength from you—
and a silent resolve
to hold you before you passed….
                        Away…
                                    Away from the world I had planned 
                                                            and hoped for
                                                                                    -for you…
                                                                                                -for me…
                                                                                                            -for us…

And hold you, I did--
Before your breath slipped away
in the dead of the night
                        I caressed your picturesque face 
                        and gazed at your moon shaped closed eyes—
                                      And dreamed…
                                                        of heaven and you

Your heart was not whole
     when you came to this world,
               but I lent you a piece of mine. 

And I carry a picture
in my heart and my mind:           
                        -A picture of health
                        -A picture of you

Cryssa, at your suggestion, I have read this endearing poem of Brenton's short life, and your heart-to-heart love for him. What can I add to what has already been said? I can only imagine the loss.
I'm glad you have the healing tool of writing about your little one. May the Lord add His reassuring touch every time you think about little Brenton.

Dear Cryssa, there is an Arab proverb, which says: Only the one who walks on embers` feels the burn. I was a teenager when I lost my baby brother. I saw the pain of my mom’s eyes. From pain I was silent as the flame burned in my heart. Since then, every night and before going to bed I had to see the star and look for him. I was dreaming of my little brother, until my wife and I had our own boy, and we called him the same name. He is now 42 years old. Once in a while I still remember the small brother and I pray for him. God Bless you Cryssa. As I said before, you are a talented and maybe a born poet. Emile

There's no words to describe the pain of losing a child. Until I lost my babies, I didn't know that kind of pain existed. God bless you. You did a wonderful job on this poem.

Decked, reading this how can one not feel mashed. It must be the most lonely, painful and frustrating time. I'd smash walls with my fist with such agony.

The image of your holey heart at the thought of his not whole, is breath-holding beautiful and heart-breaking. I love your line "My mind, held in angel's arms...". He is the "picture of health"-- all that chubby baby beauty. It's good you have this picture to remember him this way-- without all the wires, tubes and machines. It feels so good to write these things down, doesn't it-- so healing. God bless you, Sis. --Charlie

...beautiful pen...inked in tears...of a heart broken...transplanted in a mothers memory for eternity. Very moving...the beats of ones heart are held in your verse.
