Swiss Cheese Heart

For My Dear Friend, Lindsay, who after 20 months of waiting for her children to come home from Haiti, just learned that due to new rules it will be at least another year before her children can come home...if ever... But we believe in miracles!

           Swiss Cheese Heart

There was a time when my heart was full--
A time, when my heart was whole…
then time and red-tape interfered,
and my heart became full of  holes.

The pain and hope of waiting
drilled holes right through my heart,
and left me feeling hopeless
with no love in my heart.

In the murky fog and dim I felt
the only way to carry on
was to shut the door on caring
and pretend my heart was still intact.

I thought ‘twould be an easy task
to reopen all the doors
and unboard all the holes
when my dreams finally came true .

Alas, when light spilled on my heart
and my troubles went away,
I tried to unlock all the doors;
but the key I found was rusty

and the holes still remained…
But then I saw that love shone through
and I realized the holes I had
were just windows to my soul.

Sometimes those "doors" are much needed
until comes a time when we need the light
and the fresh air. But we should all know
that nothing ever dies in a compassionate soul.

It's a beautiful (and beautifully true) metaphor indeed.

This is a harrowing tale, Cryssa, yet you lighten it with your clever and penetrating metaphor that is unique and lively. Love your conclusion.... praying that it WILL, indeed, bring a happy end. Yes, miracles are the stuff of life itself. If you look for them and expect them, they rise up like yeast in the dough. Kate xx

That's an incredibly unique analogous way to poetically express the pain, and how true the final lines, that the holes can be windows to the soul. I realize my own heart may look like a sponge rather than a cheese, riveted with thousands of little holes and a few big ones. My best wishes and prayers for the Haitian children. (Sorry I haven't been back for a while, but with my schedule, I seem to have to settle for coming back to AD to do things in flurries...Jerry)

OHH! The power of cheese. I was thinking that what makes Swiss cheese so unique is the holes. The cheese is around the holes. If it weren't for the holes, we wouldn't see the type of cheese it is. Your friend has a beautiful heart. The heart around the holes will be more flavorful or attuned to love, life, God, her children,& those around her in similar situations. Wear those holes well!

It's a tragedy that these children are growing up away from this loving mother who waits. The reunion will be sweet, but time is a-wasting till then. We can pray that it happens soon, and that she can communicate with them and mentor them from a distance till then.

Love,
Connie

The story pains me, Cryss. Those poor kids! I'm so sick of political kissing to get anything done... who thinks about the children?!!

Mom would say the more holes the cheese has, the more sharp it is. Your holes have been sharpened by aging, or in other words, by molding... Readers: There are so many elements that serve to mold us-- What molds you? What sharpens your heart-soul?

Cryssa and I, along with Leo Durrant, are just finishing writing a book to benefit these waiting children in Haiti. Their plight is real. All proceeds from the book will go directly to aid this orphanage. Be looking for the huge announcement coming soon regarding "The Gravy Queen" --Charlie
