My finger feels the numbness there,
Of my mind’s reality,
My heart’s despair.
I took them off in response to you.
You took yours off first,
this much is true .
And when I did, I knew the chance
Would be that there would be this dance;
A dance that at the end would tell,
who would stand,
and who’d be felled.
My finger feels the numbness there,
Of my mind’s reality,
My heart’s despair.
And yet it still feels the need to adjust,
The bands that used to mean so much.
Like legs and arms that have been amputated;
The ghostly itches that remain keep me agitated.
I still longingly remember the wonderful memories
Of all the times before the cries and pleas on bended knees.
The times when we had but one another,
And your shoulder my pillow, your arm my cover.
For this we had, when we were lovers.
And when I had a man who would stand,
Alongside of me, hand in hand.
A man that could love,
Because he was weakened;
A man that would learn,
He had not yet reached his peak and…
Because he was good, and was kind, and was pure,
It gave me the strength to risk the hazards of love
I thought I no longer could endure.
But now, after both the bond and strength have been weakened,
My heart cries out in desperation
To the hand, pale and peakened.
The absence of those cherished, golden wedding bands,
Speak silently now of those empty hands,
Who extend to the only true grace,
The glorious, lasting, love of God’s face.
