Dedicated to all our Military at home and overseas

Weekend Warrior

One day almost four years ago
He said good morning to his world.
Drank his juice and coffee
And consumed a leisurely breakfast.

It was a weekday so off to his work he went.
Pipes and oil fields filled his day.
His mind could not embrace all he wanted to do.
He was consumed with his days and his dedication to his country.

He listened to the daily war news and talked the talk of war. Rumors had it his weekend Air Force Warriors would be called.
Would he go when that time came? Of course he would, without hesitation.
His military dedication ruled his very essence.

The deployment orders finally came: he said his farewells
As tears threatened to spill to his counterfeit smile.
Thinking you are going to go is different from knowing you are on your way.
Goodbyes are always bitter sweet.

Two years later he is leaving the hell of Iraq.
He thanks his God that he is one who can walk out, heading to Afghanistan.
His eyes and heart witnessed many being carried out, some in bags.
He tries to block the horrendous and recall only the bearable.

There was a lot of good done in the war zones of Iraq.
The children were fed, some women were able to save their self respect.
The hospitals were able to treat the many in need of help.
But he remembered clearly the smiles on the unclean faces.

They say wars are wars, but each is different
Dissimilar peoples, different reasons for fighting.
He finds himself in the mountains of Afghanistan.
No comparison to the mountains of his home.
He still feels the cause is just, or is it?
Just cause or not, he will fight the fight.
He owes it to his country, his comrades but primarily to himself.
He thinks of his loved ones, family and friends
They are all those who are now fighting at his side.

He will lead them to victory and move on to be victorious again.
When they leave the war, he is determined they will all leave
alive and together.

They think of tomorrow in their quiet times
They close their eyes and see their home ground.
When all is silent they are in the mist of sleep
Each can breathe in free air and feel their land.

He promises his Air Force, his men and himself
That with the help of his God all will be safe.
Four years of war and strife is a very long time
Now, I ask my God to bring him home safe.

As the daughter of/sister of/niece of/cousins of Veterans, and a Veteran, myself, I had to read this one. We forget the sacrifices made by our reservists. An excellent reminder, thank you for writing this one.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Beautiful tribute. I hope he gets to come home. 4 years? That is too long for one deployment. I hope he comes home alive and in one piece. I owe him a big thank you and his family also. His sacrifices are not unnoticed. Excellent write. Liz
