The evening before Mother's Day, there was a horrible one car wreck. The 16 year old driver just received her license a few days prior and was driving four of her friends to a bonfire. They never made it. She lost control, speed, and struck a tree head on. The two front passengers (both 16 year old girls) were killed upon impact. The three backseat occupants (all teenagers) were lifelined in critical condition. One girl even had to have open heart surgery. Very tragic.
How do you see through the future See past the heartache, pain and grit? How do you know when it’s coming? How do you know the flame is barely lit?
We get caught up in today and yesterday. Argue our points and voice our every need. Sometimes, our hearts are too busy To realize what we fail to ever heed.
Youth spent spinning future ties Casting dreams into the future. Friends, school…life is so large. The future is cloudy, vague and unsure.
Still…creating life around us… Befriending and scorning those… You don’t expect it to be taken. You don’t expect a teenage ghost.
Taken off course by that hand of fate… Five friends…friends till the end... Death claimed two and looking at the others as they receive prayers from every friend.
Car...unrecognizable...front bumper lies twisted in the front seat. Tree still standing, only slightly scarred. Slow down...the world repeats.
Just hours before mother’s day... They receive the phone call from hell. Daughters gone in the flash of an instant those surviving aren’t fairing well.
Teenagers...thinking they have eternity... Ah, nothing can harm them...not at all. We are but meager on God’s great stage... Thinking otherwise...that appalls.
Prom, graduation...summer vacation... All gone for this small, sleepy town as they mourn next to the damaged tree... Anxious youth...slow down!
This was a very horrible, tragic and could have been prevented accident. So sad. I know there are many of us who've lost loved ones so young. I was in an accident that pushed me into a tree head on because someone wanted to run through a stop sign. Folks, we can prevent this stuff.
My brother was the EMT who had to remove the bodies. His eyes were still wide that next day.
we have a law here in missouri that allows 16 year olds to drive but not with any other teenagers. they have to be eighteen before they can drive with other teens. but unfortuneately, these things still happen, rules just get broken and kids killed. it is tragic
So sad but you are right all we can do is hope to spread the word, like most things education is the only thing that can prevent this from happening again.
very tragic event ...just the other day, here in NY, 2 EMT personel were killed as their ambulance slamed into a tree because of a young driver who went through a stop sign ...

You have penned one powerful poem. What a great waste. This poem . . . Spurs me to repost one I wrote last year which is similar. What a waste.

I agree this is a powerful write and this is a war that is raged here on our shores so where are the peace demonstrators to march against this killing and maiming of our young, old and in between. I lost a niece ten years ago in a similiar accident one of many that died. Fine writing.
Lori, thanks for writing about this. It's a tragedy, nothing less, but offerings like yours help those affected, either immediately or by heart, move through it. Dawn
PROFOUNDLY moving and tragic story and poem; I went to the recommended site and read the article and resultant comments. Perhaps, by reading it and this well penned, emotional poem, lives will be saved and people will just SLOW DOWN. There is nothing that important to rush to your death, you know?
A further collection of poems, many from years in the Middle East, but also the California San Francisco and Central Coast areas (Santa Cruz, Carmel, Big Sur, Berkeley, etc.).
My book of poetry is being redone by me, I have a beautiful cover designed and the book will have a few more than 200 poems in it. I am going to have it printed on demand here in Canada. When it is done I will let you know when it is done and if anyo
