but if we have been lied to
misguided to the point of not even trusting the word than we must learn to sit still and believe in what is

Poem Artwork

I wonder if there waz storms

      in bottoms of stomach

 where butterflies fly

mud bones warnings

if there waz winds hiding

   calm as Sunday mornings

where Ella sang and pines long after

I wonder if the pot waz so sweet

Those souls made price tag hangings

Like pants not in cells but on streets

With different meanings

….. like Nigga

How could they know?

That sweetness equaled

 Making of new nations

        …….under waters

how could they have known?

that it would still cause people to fly

I wonder did seas water rock steady

Shove up Lot’s wife on night floors

Malcolm knew their worth

   How could he have known?

They all wazn’t the same all over this earth

Did God love fall upon us at night

Where dreams built strength

For Sojourney and Harriet where they names somehow

Turned to dust where Zora tracks paved further roads

And Nordette she turns those roads into shows

With power declaring what the dark is and ain’t

If you haven’t heard her

     You should hear her space

I wonder if Martin was made in secrecy

    All mammals ain’t wild honey

    All mammals ain’t non-violent neither

Nina sings and loved him cause

    that’s what he believed

I wonder about the gospel

Spreading over seas and centuries

 Of letting my people go

And if the pouring of wine in seas

have anything to do with the color Red

Katherine twist her body tossing sand

Under men who made music wit their feet

  For change and entertainment

Savion embodies them

  Evoke them

And his body cries for their plight

Opening wayz for strange fruit to have names

Pit in her singing da blues in her heart

Coming out her mouth Jazz

I wonder if Badu birthing Orange Moonz

Knew if it enticed underground rails to keep

No matter what it may bring

Wazn’t just for Spring see

John Henry remembered

How could he had known hearts explode

    In us too

Spike Lee knew

Alex Haley knew

     Richard Pryor did too

Pac knew even if at first he didn’t know

The sun being feed to him in his bottle

Waz a gift from his mother

I wonder if there were storms

In bottoms of stomach

Where butterflies fly

   In colors of purple

Now grey and heavy like the souls

Of people who been fighting

And undermining

And climbing

And dying off something awful

To keep rising to the top

Hova

  Maya

Ms. Joe Baker know/knew

Passing the sun inside of them and letting it grow

Fo Diana Ross Pat Cleaveland

Naomi Campbell devouring bananas too

I wonder if there waz storms

Dubois Farakhan postings inside Bearden

Or Lawerence or Parks

Gordon and Rosa cause the word was birthed

And carried

Bradley knew

I wonder waz there storms

And if so….what colors would they show

If things need to be like

the flow of woman

Of nature

Of time …and I’m telling you

I wonder

That if we knew

Will we not grow too?

The mind of the poet wonders as her soul blithely wanders up and down corridors of history spitting polished jewels of truth that sparkle hidden wisdom. Gorgeous work Ms. Jackson.

Mitzi, this is a charged poem, evoking strong emotion and provoking deep consideration. A laudable black history poem but a poem also separate from that for its concepts on knowledge and spiritual words building a strength and grasp of self-worth. :-) I see somebody's name in there that I temporarily don't recognize 'cuz I'm wondering how she made it into this auspicious line. LOL. Thank you.

Slow I dance across the page to feel, stillness heard, truth in age, folk hero writes, see past in future, close my eyes and I wonder, pack built and bought a writer and reporter pushing the trade, somehow
I wonder, where all the folk have gone, then I find you and smile from the butterflies to reality. Please have the most wonderful world you can create. Thank you... Walt

Totally compelling, Mitzi, and, like others here below, I would LOVE to hear you read this. It is MADE for recital. You bring this to a most wonderful finale, like the icing on the cake. Love the foundational work here, but the emotional crescendo with your leading question is totally ACE. Thank you and bless you, Kate xx

A poem of epic dimensions. Language to you is an intstrument you play music with. That's what I love about it (I'll never forget THE SOUND ORCHIDS MAKE and some sounds that stem from that sound resonate in everything you create [I may not always post comments but I always read you).

Take care,
Mahdi

The visual impact of this historical look back and questioning of thoughts and beliefs is stunning. So many names, faces and lines run through this and make the reader pause to consider each and every one. Though I am not familiar with all I am familiar with many and see the signifigance or this well written and serious piece of work.
Wonderful write Mitzi, this is one to be especially proud of.
