Unfathomable Depths

Trembling, I stood at the water’s edge
Gazing out at the splendor of the waves
Drawn to the grandeur before me
Even as I quivered in fear at its vastness
Something deep inside me longed to walk out
Farther and farther into this turquoise depths
Swimming when I could no longer walk
And when I could no longer swim, to sink
To explore the entirety of this exotic creation
Hesitantly, my foot touched the water
Before I turned and walked away
Back to the safety of the known
Leaving barely perceptible footprints
Which were soon washed away
I sighed as I realized how like life it was
To be drawn to the grandeur, to be
Titillated by the danger and intrigue
To yearn to be a part of something greater
But realizing the ultimate cost, choosing instead
To walk away leaving only a trace
Choosing safety and the path we know
Over the danger of exploring the depths

And I wonder
Which path is the right one
Which choice the wiser

I think I'd go for the unknown. I haven't done it yet, but at this time in my life I'm sure I would.

"hesistantly my foot touched the water," this line does awaken my inner man. I could picture this. besides its sexy and vivid.
Loved it!

the choice which brings fulfillment.
Personally I like the unknown. as long as there are no sharks. and think One choice is "Sand" the other "water" both get to those places (you know) so which one is less Irritating.

Hi Sue,
I always used to dive in and worry how to get back later,
Glad to see you back(what am I saying)
Kept the pot simmering for you till your return, just needs a touch of your brilliance to bring out the full flavour.

I only know that in life sometimes lies are wiser than truth,as for diving in at the deep end or walking on dry land?wisdom in those areas is hard for us to know as each of us has different luck...I guess in life it is best to take the safe paths and save the dangerous stuff for the white pages and typewriter... or better still live dangerously only on this (or other) poetry site ,plus in poems.
Saves getting hurt.
I loved this poem Sue ,sorry I have not been able to keep up with your poems of late my daughter Joanne was staying with me so I have been busy, unfortunately I have missed reading you but will go to your page soon and catch up.
Love from
kay.

no imprint that we leave is of minor consequence. our mark upon the life is like a pebble cast upon the waters..each ripple touches another and another..ad infinitum.
your ripples have met my own..and i have been blessed by them. which path is the right??? only you can make that choice. only you know what you can handle in this lifetime. just remember..you are never alone..and you are always loved.
hugs

This is truly a journey in just a few lines and it's so profound in its meaning. Which path is the right one? Hmm... Thanks for this :)

There is so much intensity in this write. It stirs the imagination with its rich imagery and the dark beauty of that ocean's lure.
