Hot sticky streets, the tar
spreaders still urging protection, surfaces
hot, complaining, molten.
To move cars seems impotent,
the urge to flee crowds, the grip
of tires on asphalt halting progress
toward ocean’s deep blue waves.
Stuck in the midwest, land-locked
in steam, in air fluid with
insects, the only coolness
found in motel room’s
medicinal aura, jets of sun's heat
releasing outside foggy windows.
The coast can be seen, but not
felt, and tires slog another mile,
each side of highways
strewn with fast food’s grease.
the breezes are lost today,
and the map only shows distance in miles.
