But so many hung back, watching from the bushes, peering out of windows, hiding themselves in the crowd, swarming forward, trying to see the violence and secretly hoping for the mystique of cruelty, these hangers-on slinking along became those that wailed after the death, they did nothing to stop its relentless progress, they were blood-thirsting and taunting, they were prejudiced and hateful, but after the death--so repentent, but they never spoke out when gays were crucified, they did not support civil rights for blacks, they hated immigrants and wanted to build a wall to keep them out, they hated beards and long hairs and anyone who was different, but they went to church to praise a Jew, they go to church to praise this Jew, but in real life they too would cry out, "Crucify Him!"
"...hiding themselves in the crowd, swarming forward, trying to see the violence and secretly hoping for the mystique of cruelty, ...." GAD what strong images these lines hold: the very same ones who listened to His teachings, who were healed by His hands, who believed, betrayed Him at the end. It continues to this day: they believe when it's convenient for THEM. Excellent, excellent reminder! A keeper--thank you.
