ELLEN

Many years have passed
in time gone by.
Empty time, since when I knew you.

As in a dream,
the world goes by,dimming the memory
of long ago.

Only a moment,
in this vale of tears,
when I could have asked
for a love so dear.

Then I was young,
only briefly mourned,
and continued
on my way.

Now that hidden feeling,
into a great sadness grown,
cannot be replaced,
and is all I’ll ever own.

Unpardon me but I relent it boldly;
For it is far ahead, if I can be sure of it,
And far it is, that my hallucination be valid,
And hallucination it is, as it should be,
And however, unlike itself, mysterious, unknown, and untested,
So it be foreseen in my tireless search.

The fact that the memory still wants you makes the poem all the more poignant.

Yours is a tale shared by more of us than all the great love stories ever told combined. He wasn't a poet, but pretty smart fellow who said "what doesn't kill me makes me stronger." Sadder, but stronger.
Well written, David.
