Just received heartbreaking news. . .shocked and sad and feel helpless. . . Love makes us so vulnerable, doesn't it? Sometimes you want to build a shell and move in. But always -- or almost always -- these disasters bring out the best in a lot of people. Love only grows. Not saying Love Conquers All. Know better!! Part of the point!! Sometimes we have to walk away. Sometimes we have to watch people we love walk away from someone they love. Everyone hurts. . .enough. We are on the cusp of a brand new year! With any luck at all, it will bring more good surprises than shocks. Peace and Love Beyond the Beyond, Your friend Pea

Tired of the role of Sisyphus.  You?
Rolling a rock made of conflicting emotions
up mountains where crevices yawn.
Disaster a step away.  So many tears form
and dry, probably turn to salt like Lot's wife
when he made the mistake of looking
back.  So.  Let's say No to love.

First, our affection for children has to go.
All attachment, be it to brother, sister,
mother, father, farther kin.  Friend, partner.
Time to sand away any and all who have carved
into our hearts.  We do not need the pain
that racks when a curve ball knocks one
down and down.  Vertigo, headache, roiling
stomach.  The letter will come.  Bell will chime,
phone jing-jang an ironic ballad.  Late or early
saps the knees so, almost forced to crawl.
Ribs vise, skin turns hot, then clammy.  Can be
anything.  Mangled, struck, deceived, betrayed
by others or themselves.  Human body.
Mind.  Shock piles loss.  So.  Let's close shop,
shall we?   Latch the shutters, chain the gate.

Trouble is, we  remember the smile
she smiled when she was five weeks old.
Her tiny shell fingers reaching, reaching.
. . .his tiny glass stem neck. . .round eyes
. . .watching him grow to an adolescent
giraffe.  And.  Or.  His back curve with age.
And. Or.  Gasps of release around silk
. . .moans and sighs. . .stood and cheered
as he made a 50-yard pass. . .hotdog after
clapping when she won for free-skating
. .received her Ph.D.  Trouble is, the mole
dotting the back of a neck,  hair above
salt and pepper.  Overnight snow. . .
him straightening himself out.
. . .her pulling herself up. . .crazy-mad dances,
smoking and chowing down pizza. . .spot
of sauce and gluey cheese started a food fight. . .
flowers he grew. . .that she cried because,
because she forgot. . .wordless reaches
between hands. . .strong leg lost. . .breast
.....blue glow of ebony skin. . .braids down
a back. . .make-up sex. . .making up, period. . .
tears. screams, hosannas at births. . .murmurs by
beds. . .hospitals, hospices. . .weddings,
weddings. . .hug at the funeral. . .pain
of not speaking. . .oh yes, his mashed potatoes,
her creme brulee. . .rock-hard bread . .curtains
he made. . .bowlegs jutting from shorts. . .dos
and earrings and piercings all piercing.
Scratch the plan.  Risk the look.  Push on.

Yes, we would lose a lot if we didn't love.

Scratch the plan. Risk the look. Push on.

Sometimes, that's all we can truly do. Love does make us very vulnerable - but love is life, and without it, life would be truly bleak - all the time.

Some of these things would be petty to some, to others, drive them insane. The moments between these events are livable. Plan on it. Don't let long periods of inactivity elapse. Grab the present moment! And always inquire of the poet, what is meant of this or that line! Have heros and idols and love unconditionally. Learn from the children. PROTECT THE CHILDREN. Be adamant about your freedom and open your heart. Be healthy, be independent, and discover your self-worth. Be kind. Embrace your neighbor and climb to the highest point!

If we close our hearts, we are the losers...the memories remain long after the pain wanes. Love is what we do, how could we ever live without it? Just breathe a heavy sigh and know that there is love and that love flows in many different ways. Heart tugging write, made me think of all the relationships that have changed in my lifetime, yet on some level, I still cherish the love I associate with them. Happy New Year, Pea!
Take care,
Sherry

Deep touching work sis....well written!!

Now....

Before the sun sets on 2005
Before the memories fade
Before the networks get jammed
And before I get drunk and loose my mind,
I am wishing you
A very Happy & Prosperous 2006!!

"Trouble is, we remember the smile" Pea, you have a gift for poignant observations. We would almost have to get a lobotomy not to feel some kind of pull back into the smiles and even tears of the past and if that fails, death would be the only option left. Your poem is charged with anger and deeply felt emotions.
