After reading Mr. Ed's "Shadow Man" this morning, I recalled a nightmarish entity that frequently paid me a visit..from childhood into adulthood....it was always the same horrible scenario...I'd scream for someone to pull me away from her darkness, but all that escaped my lips were moans....I think the Old Hag gave up on me about twelve years ago, because it's been that long since she's paid me a visit....maybe she's not interested in my soul anymore....I hope that's the case!

(Newfoundland folklore - The Old Hag) Drenched in sweat, choking fear constricted her throat Wreathing around on the bed, damp tangled sheets Binding her arms and legs; there was no escape! Black as night, the entity hovered above her! Hunched like an old crone, her menacing presence Struck terror in the heart of the helpless child! Faceless, her black robes concealed Nightmarish features beyond imagination! The hellish demon spoke not a word But her intentions were loud and clear… She longed to possess an innocent soul! The child screamed again and again, but Only pitiful moans escaped into the darkness. Why oh why didn’t her mother come? Could she not hear her screams? Closer now, the demon reached out Gnarled bony fingers only inches away! The child screamed again, and Suddenly the room was filled with light! Scooping her child into her arms Instinctively she knew… And an eerie chill sent goose bumps up her spine! In the quiet room, all was as it should be, But in her daughter’s eyes the nightmare still lurked! Dejavu…this had happened before Only she had been the hunted! Tomorrow she’d tell her daughter nightmares weren’t real, Even though she knew they sometimes were! © Annabel Sheila

This is not a good thing to hear from you , my friend. Sleep time should be peace time and to have this horrible dream from childhood to adulthood is not a good thing. There must be something hidden very deeply within your mind... Brilliant observation, right?

Nightmare sometimes are so very real that I would make a wager that it has been the cause of some of the older generation to "pass away in his sleep" scenario. I know I have been awakened by nightmares with my heart seemingly trying to leap out of my chest. Chilling poetry here, Anna.

I'm glad that my poem inspired yours, Annabel. And I hope The Old Hag of Newfoundland keeps her distance from you. I wish I could say the same for my spouse. She often still has terrible nightmares about The Old Hag from her childhood - an evil old 'Bruja' or witch that she says still roams the vast Southwest.
