Even if all I can offer them is my prayers....I care...As the weather gets colder not a day goes by that I don't think about the struggles of Sandy's victims! But New Yorkers are strong....

Poem Artwork

Disheartened, defeated…
Your lives uprooted like mighty trees plucked from the earth!
Nature went wild! And you were in the way!
Violated, assaulted, battered
And utterly defenceless you were like children
Unable to protect yourselves from the vicious blows!

The sky turned deadly shades of funereal black;
The sea sent monstrous waves upon a lethal surge;
The wind became a screaming banshee bent upon destruction!
You were forced into a nightmare with no escape
Your beloved homeland was ravaged without mercy
And for far too many there was nowhere to run!

And when the sky finally cleared, and the sea retreated
You wept for what once was…
For all you could see was desolation and you were all alone!
Who would take your hand? Why should anyone care?
How would you pull through? Why go on?
And one by one strangers reached out to you.

Now the tangled mass of hearths and homes
Weighs heavily upon your broken hearts
But you will triumph; you always have!
And out of the rubble you will rise again; you always have!
Into the future you will stride with courage…that’s what you’re made of!
And shoulder-to-shoulder, heart to heart; you will overcome; you always have!

Inspiring and wonderfully written to their positive spirit in such a trying time. Indeed, desolation and isolation, other than the new social media. New Yorkers are a breed apart, for certain sure.

One of the best pieces I have read on the subject. You take the time and trouble to spell out details and don't for one moment belittle the
pain and turmoil. Your compassion is showing, my friend.

Heartfelt and full of hope. The news media make it out to be more than it was. Of course those without power and left lost their homes and businesses, it is a total disaster. It seems like the cost of these disasters increases, while the human suffering is less because of all the resources victims have to pull themselves back together again.

What a sad state New York and New Jersey is in. Still no electricity in Long Island... However the destruction is so vast, it becomes hard to completely wrap one's mind about it. So true your words here, Anna.

A wonderful sonnet to courage. And we should all be helping them, and praying for them.
