Sometimes we feel like we don't belong amongst a group of people, or in a certain place... this piece is about this and more....

I SHOULDN'T BE HERE
(July 11, 2013)

I shouldn't be here
In this place that brings me no comfort,
This place where every stare
Cuts through me like a knife,
Slicing deep,
Taking me apart inch by inch,
Until there is nothing left of me
But pieces of a puzzle
I'll never be able to put back as a whole.

I don't belong amongst these people,
For what they think of me
Is not the person that I am,
That I am meant to be.

I shouldn't be here,
Yet here I am amongst these people
Pretending like everything is fine
When it is not.

Yes, these people are my people
But are they really my people?
Are we one and the same?
Are any of us really here
Because we have to be here?
Or are we just here
Because we have nowhere else to go?

From my book An Unforgettable Journey

I wrote this piece in my writing class. We were given a list of phrases and had to choose one that resonated with us and write a very short memoir or fiction piece in five minutes. I chose the phrase I shoulnd't be here and what you read above is what I ended up writing. No editing has been done. Upon reading it now I realize it is more poetic than just standard prose so posted it as a poem piece. The piece is a bit philosophical and psychological. There is depth to it too. Please let me know your thoughts on it...

I can relate to this all too well.
Not much choice but to hang around.
There are such blessings I embrace- but most seem in spite of being here.

This tells me you are capable of placing yourself outside of your comfort zone to feel what it feels like to be an outsider from the inside. I shouldn't be here says a lot more in those unedited lines which tell more truths than something you had to work over and over. This rings of the ability to create and do so profoundly. Excellent work, Lena.

A thought-provoking piece, Lena. I certainly can relate to what you have expressed through your verses and I am sure many others can as well. Love and best wishes,

Lena, I and all of us have felt we did not belong. People being of
different classes, schooling, etc. I have felt intimidated, alienated, shy...I'm sure you get the picture. Enjoyed.

Always,

Deborah

It's understandable for someone to be alienated when they are thrown into a totally new environment that they are unable to communicate effectively in. It's another thing for someone who is growing up in an environment and feels alien in it. I have a hard time identifying with that kind of alienation, although there are some things about the culture that I grew up in, that I despise.

Very psychological and instructive poem.

I think those of us, who differ from 'the norm' often feel this way. Your words bring this feeling alive perfectly.

Definite depth to this. It's one if those things you could go mad if you thought about it too much. Interesting thoughts you brought up though.
