Escape
Watching autumn leaves float to the ground
Hear the fire crackling, with the setting sun
Lining riverbanks, Major Mitchells’ abound
Me, blue and nature, molding as one.
Whispering breezes blow through branches
Distant, familiar cry of a single crow
Brolgas’ woo mates, performing courting dances
Tall gums and gidgee gently sway and bow.
Wallabies lazily graze on nearby grasses
Wedge Tails continue circling high above
Emus “glook – glook” as a dingo browses
On a fence rail cockatoos peck and shove.
Noisy cicada’s start with diminishing light
Billy’s boiled; I pour to make a brew
Sipping from my panikin, this chilly night
Grab myself a biscuit and throw one to blue.
Eyes now heavy, rest my head soon
Blue’s settled next to the truck tyre
Owl’s eyes glint, bright from the moon
We’re warmed next to this campfire
In my swag, looking at shimmering stars
From the river, frogs chirp ‘n’ creak
Far from cities and seminars
Drifting into contented sleep.
