Creek camp memories
When city hustle and pace gets you down
Through all this haze everything seems so brown
Your life spark is all but diminished
Exhausted and glad the workday has finished.
Replace that fire and heartwarming feeling
Grab a beer, a bottle or two of Riesling
Head bush, set up on a creek bank so right
Pitch your tent in the cool receding light.
Stacked branches, now are burning
On the hotplate, steaks you’re turning
Already one’s starting to unwind
Forgetting pressures, forgetting time.
Legs outstretched, slumped in this chair
Breathing emission free fresh clean air
Watched by a possum, bulging eyes so bright
Illuminated from darkness by the campfire light.
Serenaded by the sounds of crickets singing
In unison with millions of stars shimmering
Fires glow changes shadows on ghost gums
While up a stringy bark a frilly lizard runs.
An owl lifts its head to take a peek
Missus, already in her swag sound asleep
Momentarily mesmerised by the campfires glow
Hypnotised by the sound of the creeks gentle flow.
Would love to live here for the rest of my life
Instead of banging and clanging of city strife
Lines of cars, chimneys and choking smog
Suited drones, pink ladies and their matching dogs.
Moving as one, blank faced robots ‘n glazed stare
Lips glued shut, no smile and not a care
Don’t know how they do it, how they survive
Locked into this daily routine of 9 to 5.
Screaming curlew’s retrieve me from my trance
Noticing two gecko’s fighting on a nearby branch
Bright silvery moon highlights a clouds edge
Diamond firetail’s asleep in their mistletoe beds.
I know its time, feeling tired, I can’t stop yawning
Different scenes will greet me waking with the morning
Climb in my swag and drift off to sleep
In the Aussie bush, next to this beautiful creek.
