Black Cockatoo
Black silhouettes against clear blue sky
Oh! So high they seem to fly
Turning, showing their flashes of red
Now in a Gum where they’ve made their bed.
Adapting so well to the changes about
Be it torrential rain or long harsh drought
Fleeing bush fires that sweep the plain
Returning to their tree, starting again
Their familiar screech, heard for miles around
Dozens flock together, pecking at the ground
On the side of the road, having a feed
Where a truck spilled some grain and seed.
I know some have made pets of them too
Don’t know, if it’s the right thing to do
Should stay in the bush, but that’s my perception
Recuperating injured young, are an exception.
For these beautiful birds we call our own
When you visit, please don’t damage their home
I salute these endearing creatures so true
This unique Australian, the Black Cockatoo
