Years ago...I remember...
My older cousin led with churning thoughts and dark eyes brimming with mischief.. Beneath his foot, a frog lay belly-up, helpless, in anguish. In one hand, he held a lighter. In the other, a melting straw. Hot wax dripped, falling, burning. and I had to wonder: Is it the power you enjoys? The dance of flame? The transmutation of plastic?
Like the frog, I feel the weight of your interest bearing down on me as you smile.
"Cool, huh?"
I nod. I am a child who is not yet brave enough to disagree.
This a very powerful poem. I think every child, at one time or another, has endured a situation much like this one. It is by our own growth and wisdom that these memories are pushed full force back into our mind. Too bad that we weren't given those gifts when the events came into play. Such is life...
Many years ago when I was a younger, I watched a man shoot a dog then attempt to justify himself by saying he was only doing his job. His job was caretaking the property of a cattle owner who left instructions that any stray dogs found on the property were to be shot. I watched the dog who was gasping for breath, choking on his own blood as he was dying. I looked over at the man who was older than me, my contempt, disgust & anger reflected in my glaring stare. His eyes met mine and I sensed his disappointment that I would not, could not, share in the excitement of his kill. I walked away in silence feeling sick & ashamed that I could not stop him. I stole his joy that day & he stole my innocense. When I read this poem I thought about that day & connected instantly with the sentiments expressed.
