She was my namesake
and my paternal grandmother,
aged 65 when I was born.
She was, until the day she died,
to fits of the giggles prone.
The daughter of Czech immigrants,
and the second oldest of ten,
her trusty shield for enduring hardship
was her doubtless, insatiable grin.
Through "all good THINGS,"
I knew of happiness;
at least I thought I did,
'til she gently raised my comprehension
of the conditions in which she'd lived.
While I was hardly "spoiled,"
my life is filled with fun;
I count a cake for every birthday . . .
She recalled soley One!
Most precious among her memories,
her eyes would dance as she would tell
"How Mother baked that special cake--
Oh! The gift of taste and smell !!! "
And as for hugs and kisses,
her memories much like the cake--
"Papa rocked me one whole night through
to ease a monstrous toothache."
She put herself through Nursing School,
after leaving home at 21.
Sound descretion brought "Kit,"
her life-long Love,
and the birth of two beautiful sons.
Thus, it is my privilledge
to claim her heredity mine;
if genetics follows suit,
I'll be Square Dancing at 89.
And when I am prone to pining
or lamenting this or that--
I am merely called to reflect a while
on the radiant magic
of Martha Victoria's smile.
So many of our ancestors come from such hard and humble beginnings but they were greatly loved and will always be remembered and cherished. This touches me very deeply.

Great imagery. It's like watching
a sepia-colored movie. Nostalgic.

The love in this poem is so pure and true that not to have cried in it I think would have been a waste of a heart.Through tears I type that 'I loved this poem' and the feelings it that you shared with me.I saw my own grandparents in it ,how blessed we are Vicky, to have known such people as the likes of your dear Martha Victoria.
Give her a hug from Australia will you?
Thanks.
