A New Beginning

I was lost in the darkness of my own mind.
Inciting my heart to beat so hard I could
hear the drums echoing in my ears .
Sending me deep within myself where
there was nothing. No feelings, no pain.
Just a loneliness that only I can feel.
There is no compassion in this world.
No humor, no one is celebrating life
as far as I can see. I venture out
into a world devoid of any human
sensibilities toward others. Fearing
that if I tried to join society I would
infect my inner self and become
insensitive to the deep pain of others.

Even then—no compassion. Nothing
to celebrate as life throws us into a
merry-go-round of ups and downs
clouding our thoughts as we spiral
downward into the abyss waiting for
all that refuse to open their hearts
and join in the celebration of life.

It is up to each of us to show by example
that there is more to life than the bad
times. Every day brings with it a new
beginning, a chance to renew ourselves.
A chance to show compassion to others
and help those that feel lost and desperately
need our friendship and guidance. So open
up your heart and let the love shine through
the clouds and drizzling rain into a
rainbow of a new beginning. One that has
no end.
