I Can't Love You

I can't love you the
way I once did- on
Lazy Summer afternoons,
with little green apple hopes-
We both know, today;
we were just kids

But wasn't it good,
It felt great to be carefree and young,
It didn't seem to matter, that
the sun was hot; the ground was dry-
As long as CCR played;
and The Eagles made us cry

You carved our initials on our
favorite shade tree,
The plus sign and heart, made it
all complete-
You'd smile, then hug me oh so tight-
Kiss me gently, til my heart
skipped beats

Black top country roads; Sunset walks;
Holding hands and kickin' cans-
Skipping stones on the neighbors's pond-
Waiting for life to unfold; Our lives;
...and so it did...
Now all we have left, are the memories,
in .45's and unplayable eight tracks-
Plastic bottles; Freeway traffic;
No trespassing; and the tree is gone

I can't love you the way I
once did-
Our lives unfolded; The creases
faded with time-
All that remains are the memories;
Memories of when we were
just kids

I love the finale! It says it all, "I can't love you the way I
once did - Our lives unfolded; The creases faded with time - All that remains are the memories." Sums up perfectly! You have taken me to memory lane.

God bless, Lisa.

Sandie.

The innocence of young love fades with all that life throws at us. This fact doesn't mean that we love less, simply that we love differently. This poem aches with the bittersweetness of memories shared and life that has tempered the softness that once graced your lives. Absolutely beautiful and well written poem, Lisa and one to save in my library. This leaves me misty-eyed and longing for the simpler times when we were young and nothing in life had yet bruised our spirit.
Take care,
Sherry

Outstanding, Lisa. Makes me remember the first time I came to your Den. Saw The Eagles farewell concert on NBC the other night. They were awesome. Those boys can harmonize the birds down. This poem is a keeper. ~~Nordette

Lisa:

I enjoyed this a lot, and it reminded me of another time. It is a shame that the fresh love of our youth is not always sustainable.

Good Job.

Thank you
I fell right into this poem it was like reliving those times
where there was still a sort of innocense as compared to today
I mean what youth of today would be skipping stones or just walking together.
I really enjoyed this it was like a gentle feather tickling distant memories
and let us not forget CCR Yes! not to mention Led Z
Should I even mention barry white?
