Standing Here Now

You know?
Standing here now, looking back on that day,
Not one emotion has changed at all-
The first one, puzzlement; The second, fear-
Then came the worry; sadness; grief; and the endless flow of tears-
They each, renewed themselves, stepping up a level each time-
Finally, an empty stairwell-
That was the moment; The moment The Towers fell-
Then it started all over again; One just had no way to know-
When it all would end; This madness; This hell-

You know?
Standing here now, looking back on that day,
Not one face has changed; I still remember them all-
From the confused to the frightened-
From the ashes arose so few-
Crowds of faces, began to gather-
Oh, Now what do we do?
Most had never been there; No thoughts of war at home-
Not here on our own land;
This is still, America, the place where Freedom roams.

You know?
Standing here now, looking back on that day,
Through all the smoke; The fallen ash;
Beneath the twisted steel-
We felt violated; Raped of all we knew-
Ripped to shreds like paper;
but, they had to know, we’d heal.

You know?
Standing here now, looking back on that day,
It wasn’t about the city; Nor was it about the fear;
It wasn’t the smoke; Fire or ash;
All that was just brick and mortar; Concrete and metal beams-
It had nothing to do with buildings; Silver; Gold or cash-
They wanted us to question Freedom;
and how it came to be-
And you know? Standing here now and looking back-
It’s quite plain to see.

You know?
Standing here now and looking back on that day,
Still, we are so much higher than they will ever be.
We have something stronger; More powerful than man-
We’ve a Nation Under God; A Nation Proud and Free.

You know?
Standing here now and looking back on that day;
They didn’t change a thing-
Freedoms’ still the American way.

I concur with Gwendolyn's astute and patriotic observations below..

A fine tribute, and a wake up call to all those, who have buried their heads in the sand..

"Standing Here Now"

BRAVO, BRAVO!!!
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU FOR THIS SUPERB WRITE!!

"FREEDOM IS NOT FREE"
If any individuals think it is they need to think again!!

The mind clings to the "Old Glory" and always will. 3 CHEERS!!

Forgetting does not HEAL!
"I AM THANKFUL TO GOD TO BE AN AMERICAN"
I rather go down with my USMC dog tags between my teeth first.
WE DO have the best country on earth, traveling abroad a person will
realize and be told personally how others want to get to the "Land of the FREE"
that says a mouthful, and you sure have with this poem!!

"Standing Here Now"

Sincerely,
Gwendolyn A. Thomas

Strong and proud, this poem needs no words of praise. Like the American flag and the American people it stands tall as well.

A people that thinks by waving their asses in the air five times a day, works too hard with the wrong end of their bodies. They will never get the message or with the program. Allah, the moon god, forbids clear thinking, especially for oneself.

Damn fine poem, girl.

You're right, Lisa, although America seems to be forgetting. We can never let that happen; our way of life was changed forever that dark day, and it will happen again if we don't learn the lessons taught. There are enemies out to destroy us. We cannot let that happen again. A powerful reminder, my friend; thank you!

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

We must never forget the horror that was September 11, 2001, if we do, we are only making ourselves more vulnerable for further attacks. Good points you raise; very well done! BRAVA!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Burleson, Karen Lynn. :( >tears <

Freedom is still our way, yes, but there are many who have become complacent, who just can't wrap their thoughts around the idea of freedom not "just being here." Freedom must be renewed and protected with each generation because it is always one generation away from becoming extinct. Freedom is never free; the price is higher than anything else we can imagine. If we want to remain free, it is going to take the resolve of every generation of Americans, or very soon, we will be living under a different flag. Beautiful poem, Lisa. Some excellent and deep thoughts to send me off on my workday.
Take care,
Sherry
