YOU ARE IF
You are who I could be, had my mother loved me
You are who I could be had I not lost three babies
You are who I could be had I not learned of child abuse
You are who I could be had I not worked in animal shelters
You are who I could be had I not been ill for decades
You are who I could be if I could believe in gods
You are who I could be if I didn't wear yard sale clothes
You are who I could be if I could sing
You are who I could be if I could balance on heels
You are who I could be if I had music software
You are who I could be if I had alabaster skin
You are who I could be if laughing weren't about pain
You are who I could be if I could sleep through one night
You are who I could be if I could nap
You are who I could be if one wound ever healed
You are who I could be if my eyes twinkled just so
I am who you could be, if you could write bad poems

Or do we? How come you can write such lovely painful poems? But
don't stop. You do it so well. I once wrote that I'd be happy if
I could be the guy my son is. Does that count? -gene.
