The Offering...

If I were to offer you my soul;
Black,
Soiled,
Ragged and torn,
Worn thing that it is...

I wonder then,
What you would do,
How you would see it,
If it’s hollow screams,
And rude echoes,
Would haunt you,
As they do me...

If you were to take it,
And taste it,
Would the bile rise in your mouth?
And the blackness I warned you about,
Would it seize your heart,
And make it unable to feel the love,
You dream so much about?

If I were to offer you my heart,
Black,
Empty
Flaccid bag of moldy flesh,
That it is...

I wonder then,
What you would see,
When you look at me...
Would you believe then,
All I tried to tell you,
Or would your heart still see,
The make believe me?

You ask for my heart,
Not knowing its condition,
You think there is something there,
Worthy enough to save,
But I tell you true -

You know not what you do.

When you ask me so quietly,
Do I love you...?
My mind ceases to function,
Or overloads in a multitude of thoughts...

Love.
A word that means...
Do I think about you every waking moment?
Do you haunt my dreams at night?
Is it your face I see so clear,
In my minds eye?

And yet...
The wounds of life,
Have left me battle sore,
And weary of death...

You stand before me,
So beautiful and full of dreams,
Dreams I no longer believe in,
There is no hope left in my heart;

Empty and cold,
It lies alone and forgotten,
In a tomb of stone…

The sun does not shine here!

My love,
You would wither and die in my arms...
Too many have died before my eyes,
Whispering words that I remember still,
Words that I still hear…

I will not add your name,
To the list on the stone walls,
Surrounding my heart,
I could not bear to see it...

So I offer you a way out,
Turn now and walk away-
Save yourself some pain,
Find a young beauty to love and cherish,

It will never be me.

I am not the sum of your dreams,
I am no more than a thought you grasped at,
One fateful day,
When your world crashed around you,

I never thought you would fall in love with me,
Never dreamed you would come to see me,
As the woman of your dreams...

It’s all a lie.

Let me offer you,
The freedom to turn and walk away,
Now before you are harmed,
By the darkness that dwells in my heart,

I could not bear it,
If you were to say,
It was me that tore your world apart…

We must end it before it starts.

Thus I offer you a way out,
A rose without thorns,
A release from the vow you spoke of,
So softly one moonless night…

Let me go before the shadows,
That inhabits my world,
Find their way into yours,
And we both wake in the morning,
With tear stained faces…

And speak with soft regret,
Of the love we once held so dear,
In the dreams of our heart,
And foolishness of youth…

Love.
A word that means...
Do I think about you every waking moment?
Do you haunt my dreams at night?
Is it your face I see so clear,
In my minds eye?

I know this type of love but I believe there are many "levels" of love and not all seem to know "love" the same way. Your poem is very compelling. Thank you for sharing this gift. Love and best wishes to you,

Regis

Reindeer , This was so excellent ... This is a true write with all thoughts coming from heart . Offering of goodness for a love . Only good one can do that ... Only nice heart can think of that ... Only beautiful heart can feel the goodness that live in good hearts ... I can feel the trueness in the heart of the women whom u have picturised in this write.

Retta, I am just bowled over by your writes. The intensity and pain in this one really shakes me up! How you manage to even contemplate these feelings - let alone articulate and express them with such beautiful clarity - is quite beyond me. I've no idea whether the relationship you have shared with us over the past few days is real or abstract, but what continues to impact me is that this love that is "between the two of you" is so deep that you can mutually express the deepest, darkest chasms of life and death together. Such a love goes beyond the bounds of mere existence and reality into the incomprehensible realms of the metaphysical. Your "love" touches those places where few of us can even begin to go. Bless you. KB

Deeply honest poem with a stroke of tragedy. Perhaps wise compassion is more important than love. I deeply enjoyed this write. Franz

(((reindeer)))

heartshattering write--dark, tragic, hopeless. vividly scribed. this one made me cry.

i hope that's not how you see yourself--i don't see that. i see light and love, and consider your friendship and encouragement a treasure

Such strong emotions, powerful enough to spring board you into a better deeper truer honest love, when ready. I took a two year femanimal sabaticle before I would love again, realising I go for the same destructive types.

May the sun shine bright upon you..

It is painful to move from a place where dreams are of never-ending joy and fullfilment, to a realisation that the love of romance is transient and, in the end, unforgiving. The darkness we gather in our hearts is nothing other than that to which we dare not show the light. Lest we be judged for our thoughts. Nothing is so dark that it cannot be shared with another who knows and accepts their own darkness.

This is lovely poetry, Retta. I am glad to have finally met you.
