In the darkness,
There is truth,
Breeding behind the shadows,
Sliding out now and again,
To peer into the world of light…

I stay there,
So I can see it,
Whisper my secrets,
And it keeps them safe,
It will never tell…

Most fear the dark,
The shadows that hide there,
But not I,
It’s there that I see you,
Listen to the words and dreams,
You try to share…

Sometimes I feel I’ve lost my way,
Yet in the dark,
It doesn’t matter,
Everything is the same…

Truth and despair stand side by side,
Love and dreams are afraid to come there,
You think I do not care,
But that was never true ,

I love so much it hurts,
See what you want me to believe,
But alas my jaded eyes pass over you,
Your pretense does not fool me!

I am the shadow that pains your heart,
The fear that leaves you trembling in the dark,
But I am not afraid,
And though you think me brave,

I must tell you the truth,
I am just like you!
Searching in the shadows,
For a reason to live,

Trying to live each day,
As best I can,
Trying to understand,
Just what the hell was,
The master plan…

Looking for where you hid the truth,
The reason you come unbidden,
Into my dreams at night,
The reason I struggle,
To peer from the shadows,
Into your world of light…

Beautiful write Retta. But remember that we are not forced to live in the shadows nor are we obliged to dwell there. Believe in yourself

Reindeer, I am in complete awe of this poem. It resonates deeply with my experience, and you have a way with your writing that is like no other I've found here at AD. Wishing you much light and peace in the darkness, Dawn

Courage and inspiration are what keep even the most dismally
inclined lives of poets...going on...and thriving.
Adversity breeds brilliance in those who are in love with words.
This poem "shines."

Courage is like an embryo--conceived and shaped in the dark, but thru the birth canal of truth and discovery, new perspectives on the life we live come forth. And the name of the babe is called "Purpose."

Superb poem! No one captures the dark side like you Reindeer!
The question "what was the master plan" How much
I know that feeling. Never knowing what the hell it
was all about.

Wow, such a truth filled write. This has so many elements of truth to it.

"Truth and despair stand side by side,
Love and dreams are afraid to come there,"

Love and dreams get lost in this world. Superb write.

No light without darkness...and we all have our own slices of darkness in which to hide...or to search. This was very expressive and very well done!
