Fading Dreams

I had a dream last night,
A dark dream,
Lonely and stark,
Empty and devoid of life,
My trees leafless,
The world was empty and cold…

I looked around,
And realized sadly,
How much it mirrored my life,
Me,
Standing here,
Looking over there,
And seeing the sum of my dreams…

I saw you there,
Standing near your house,
Looking over,
Staring out into the world…

Your hands were on your hips,
The white of your eyes so bright,
Glowing softly in the fading light…

I wondered what you were seeing,
If you looking for me…
Standing here,
Wishing you were near enough to touch,
To caress my cheek with your lips,

But the distance is too great,
And you are too far away,
The day is ending,
Beginning to fade,

The moon rises,
Revealing so much,
Truth and lies,
Lying side by side…

You say you will come one day,
And take me away,
But I wonder sadly,
If there will be anything left to save…

Have you ever felt as though,
You were fading away?
This is where I am now,
I am as opaque as my dream,

Can you see me?
Can you dear?
I am afraid of your answer,
Afraid of me too,

And these dark dreams,
That tell me what I must do…

I hope you come soon.

Dreams only fade if we don't act. Sometimes a dream is meant to fade, and the longing misplaced. Perhaps Fading Dreams is the perfect title to this very exquisite poem.

Retta, Very beautiful, heartfelt longing in this exquisite write! Dreams gives one hope, and fading dreams cause the hope to fade! When we truly find someone to share our dreams, then the hope and the dreams never die! ...May you have sweet dreams and keep the hope alive, Dear Poet!

Hmmm, your first stanza says many things. You have analyzed it as:
"A dark dream,
Lonely and stark,
Empty and devoid of life,
My trees leafless,
The world was empty and cold…"

This is a great poem, and/or perhaps maybe this dream, is a subconscious plea for self recognition, self assertiveness and life change. However, you certainly have talent and mastery over your creative poetry indeed!

Retta, this is an exceptionally powerful piece of longing poetry. Dreams never fade away, only ones ability to reach out for them does. One can only hear and make an informed decision based upon what is spoken directly to them. I loved this piece as I do everything I’ve ever read of your timeless creations, Poet. You have a very rare gift, and you use it to the max! Great work!

I agree with so many others below, Retta, that you are incredible at this form of expression. This has a ghost-like quality to it, and yet clarity and sharpness of focus, too. Your desire to make connection, almost as if from another world, is tangible. I am sure that like fresh, green shoots spring forth from percieved dead wood, there will be a new springtime for you and your dreams... but the thought that they are "telling you what you must do" is very powerful and perhaps a challenge. Loved the lines "Truth and lies, Lying side by side..." Atmospheric and evocative. TY Kate xx

Your words were sublime and cruel. This poem, this dream, had every element in your life that was important to you and it was attempt to convey the shallowness of all that importance. This was more vision than dream.
