Sun Afire

Sun afire,
Blazing heat purifying flesh,
White bones,
Lay on the desert sand,
In bas relief…

I thirst for life,
My lips are dry,
Skin cracked,
And brutally aged…

But I shall not die just yet.

Sun afire in all its glory,
Sending waves of flame into my brain,
Memories that shimmer like a mirage,
I know is not real,

But still I love you.

Sun flares, red orange and bloated,
Hateful light burning into my brain,
My skin is dry,
My lips you once kissed with such passion,
Now bleeding red and cracked,

The fever has taken me.

Red dew that splatters wicked patterns
In too white desert sands,
The snake slithers from his dark hole,
Tongue touching and tasting my life-

He finds it wanting…

All the while the sun blazes,
In white hot fury,
Victory a grimace on his face,
And my bones bleached white,
Blend into the desert sand.

One of the best metaphors of love vanquished. Your words moved the words to their final resting place and then there was nothing left to say. Good.

Retta,

Your poem gave me quite a dried up parched feeling. Searching for the oasis that always turns out to be a mirage. Well written.
