Poem Artwork

He came with a heavy fluttering of wings,
Casting a black shadow on the moonlit earth,
I heard him land and bend the limb of the tree,
And wondered what the hell it could be...

I heard him call to me,
A questioning whoo…whoo?
And I whispered back,
It’s just me...

White wings fluttered and then settled down,
His eyes pierced my soul,
And he asked again,
Whooo...whoo?

The legends of my people,
Passed through my mind,
I knew he was not here to be kind,
Go! I hissed,
There is no one here for you!

But he sat so still,
Staring at me with those eyes,
And saw my sister reflected,
In a shroud of white...

No! I said again,
She is not for you!
But he simply stared,
With his wise eyes,
And I felt my heart begin to die…

Whoo…Whoo?
He called again,
I threw a rock at him,
He turned his head,
And watched it hit the ground,
Then fluttered his wings and took wind,
Calling softly behind him,

Whoo…Whoo?

Rein, this is so unique. I love how you blend the words as spearate liken to a relationship and then liken to being one with nature as we are rightly so. Fantastic parallel in culture, nature, and relationships.

I'm often awed at the beliefs of the native americans. The world is slowly turning to show that these beliefs have a lot more meaning than first realised. Interestingly, those beliefs are not that different from those of the ancient Celts. Therefore there must be something in it.

Great write Retta

I hope you hurled that rock good and hard, even though it didnt hit the target, tis a warning.

Loved this write, chilling yet strangely amusing, hmmmmm maybe it's just my perceptions :)

This is a departure, for me at least, from what I associate with you, Retta, but no less spiritual and insightful. No, maybe I'm wrong here: it is me who has not appreciated that you have just shifted your focus from the human to the animal kingdom - and I am sure that all interconnect in spiritual terms. Powerful observational detail with minimal strokes. Much said whilst being yet beautifully understated. Makes us all want to chorus: "She is NOT for you!!" An iron fist in a velvet glove... Pay no mind to Andy, he was dropped on his head when he was a child. I really liked the surrealism within this finely-written poem. Your composition and the way you wove your words, it wasn't hard for me to imagine the rustling of the owl's winds and the creak of the tree limb as he landed on it. Good stuff.
